In tragic news, the celebrated actor Barry Newman has passed away at the age of ninety-two, his widow confirmed. The celebrated actor was at the New York-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center when he passed away, according to a statement released by his wife, Angela, who confirmed that he died in the New York City hospital facility on May 11, 2023. Barry Newman originally came from Boston, Massachusetts, and was perhaps best known for his starring role as Kowalski in the 1971 crime thriller film Vanishing Point.
Newman’s wife told The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday that the actor passed away a few weeks earlier at a New York hospital. Prior to his role in Vanishing Point, Barry Newman had done some great work on the stage on Broadway as well as in the 1970 movie The Lawyer.
Newman spoke to THR about the biggest role in his career, saying it was a great experience for him to work on the set of the popular film, “This was very unique. I had just done this film about a lawyer, a Harvard graduate, and I thought this is a different kind of thing. The guy was the rebel, the antihero. I enjoyed doing that very much.”
In addition to his role in Vanishing Point, Newman was also known for playing defense lawyer Anthony Petrocelli in the popular 1970 movie The Lawyer. His career began in 1957 when he started working in the Herman Wouk play Nature’s Way.
After that, he also starred in the 1975 movie The Take, as well as several episodes of TV shows like Law & Order and NYPD Blue.
Outside of his acting career, Newman was a great humanitarian and philanthropist who dedicated much of his time to helping those less fortunate than himself. Angela told THR about her late husband’s dedication to helping others, saying, “He was a man of great integrity and compassion who devoted his life to helping the less fortunate. He made an impact on many lives through his generous donations and volunteer work, and I know he will be deeply missed.”
Barry Newman is survived by his wife as well as their two children, Aidan and Talia. The actor will be remembered for his excellent performances on both the big and small screens as well as his charitable work throughout the years. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all those he touched through his life’s work.
Newman was born in Boston on November 7, 1930. He pursued his education at Boston Latin School and Brandeis University.
In 2009, Barry Newman was diagnosed with vocal-cord cancer. He took time off of his acting career at this point but still worked into his nineties after recovering from cancer. His final role was in a 2022 independent movie called Finding Hannah.
This obituary was written in honor of Barry Newman’s legacy. May he rest in peace for ever and ever.
