Britney Spears’ new memoir reveals family secrets
Britney Spears’ much-anticipated, tell-all memoir The Woman in Me has just been released, and her fans are still reeling from all the juicy secrets the autobiography reveals. The book release comes just months after Spears announced her divorce from long-term partner Sam Asghari, whom she had finally married upon release from her conservatorship. So, what does all this upheaval mean for the pop princess? And what will happen to Britney’s incredible property portfolio? Click or scroll on to find out more…
Troubled teen years
Perhaps the most tragic takeaway from the star’s memoir is just how troubled a childhood she endured. Britney recalls that she was “usually scared” growing up, in a household where her father drank heavily, and her parents “fought constantly.”
While Britney’s early rise to fame provided some element of escape from her difficult home life, teenhood in the Mickey Mouse Club came with its own problems. Spears described the show as a “boot camp for the entertainment industry” and confesses that by the age of 13, she was already smoking, drinking, and driving.
Relationship with Justin Timberlake

It was during her Mouseketeer years that Britney met and began dating fellow cast member Justin Timberlake. Spears reveals that their first kiss took place at a sleepover as the result of a game of Truth or Dare at the age of 12 or 13. She confesses that both she and Justin cheated during the course of their relationship, but that the press unfairly conveyed her as the “harlot who’d broken the heart of America’s golden boy.” She also revealed that she underwent a termination while dating the star because he didn’t want to be a father.
Financially cutting off mum?

Another dark revelation from the memoir is just how estranged Britney has become from her parents. The pop star explains how she begged for anyone other than her father to be granted the conservatorship back in 2008, emphasising that “literally anyone else – and I mean anyone off the street would have been better.”
While Spears initially maintained a better relationship with her mother and indeed allowed her mum the use of and paid utilities on a large house in Louisiana for over a decade, a recent fallout has reportedly left mum Lynne “struggling to pay her bills.”
Let’s take a look at the lavish home Britney ‘gifted’ her mother…
Lynne Spears’ ‘gifted’ mansion

Lynne is reported to currently reside in this sprawling 6,500-square-foot mansion in Kentwood, Louisiana which was built by Britney for her parents on a 7.4-acre plot of land, and completed in 2001. Having sold Britney’s humble childhood home in 2021, Lynne no longer owns a property of her own and the expansive woodland grounds complete with pool offers plenty of privacy.
However, a further blow was dealt to their relationship not long after the conservatorship was overturned – when Lynne requested that Britney be made to pay her $660,000 (£544k) attorney bill accrued during the guardianship. Britney’s lawyer shot down the request, with court filings stating that Britney had paid Lynne Spears’ utilities on the property for years including property taxes, pest control and maintenance, totalling $1.7 million (£1.4m). Lynne later retracted the request, perhaps in a bid to reconcile with her daughter.
Struggling financially

Shown here is the mega-mansion during construction in 2000. While Lynne has enjoyed many years living in luxury here, it is understood she is now struggling financially, due to her ongoing rift with her daughter – which an insider says has “seriously impacted” her finances. According to close sources, she has taken on part-time work at a local school, where the Daily Mail has reported substitute teachers can expect to earn around $15 (£12) an hour.
While Britney and Lynne showed signs of reconciling earlier this year – when Lynne paid her a visit at her home in California in May – it was shortlived in the wake of her divorce from Sam Asghari.
Let’s take a look at Britney’s life post-split…
Separating the dogs
@britneyspears / Instagram
As details continue to emerge about Britney’s acrimonious break up with Sam Asghari, while it appears she has ‘cut off’ her mum, it appears that the singer is reportedly shelling out $10,000 (£8.3k) a month for Sam’s new apartment, located in one of LA’s most prestigious high-rises. The pair are reportedly still not on speaking terms, and it appears that Sam’s lawyers are still lobbying for a larger payoff for Sam. As part of their divorce settlement, the couple have also had to divide up their dogs, with Sam getting to keep their Doberman, and Britney retaining ownership of the other four, including Australian shepherd Sawyer.
Sam and Britney’s split
@britneyspears / Instagram
So when exactly did Sam and Britney’s marriage go south? Despite posting videos together as recently as 14 July, fitness trainer Sam filed for divorce just over a month later, citing ‘irreconcilable differences,’ according to TMZ. The couple “haven’t got along for some time” and split after a “major blow up,” a source told ET Online. According to the report, Sam confronted Britney over rumours she had been unfaithful, which led to the “nuclear” argument that appears to have been the final straw for the couple. Britney is “adamant she didn’t cheat,” but it seems the couple have had issues for a while.
The recent TMZ documentary, Britney Spears: The Price of Freedom, claimed the pair had “screaming arguments” and even made allegations that Britney posed a physical threat to her husband. However, the couple – who started dating in 2016 – continued to display their love in affectionate social media posts, including this one, in which Britney revealed that the pair were redesigning their home.
What’s next for the former couple?
@samasghari / Instagram
In what may turn into a major headache for Britney, the divorce filing hints that Sam may contest the prenup he signed before marrying the star. “[He] has yet to determine the full nature and extent of the separate property assets and obligations of each party,” court documents reportedly read. “There are various items of community and quasi-community assets and debts, the full nature and extent of which are unknown to [Sam] at this time,” it continued. According to Page Six, Asghari is “attempting to negotiate concessions beyond his prenup and threatening to go public with extraordinarily embarrassing information about Britney unless he gets paid.” He has since denied this claim.
In search of a ‘stable’ relationship
@britneyspears / Instagram
While TMZ cites a source with ‘direct knowledge’ of the situation who says Britney will simply “write a check to Sam and that will be the end of it,” the pop star has reportedly hired divorce lawyer to the stars, Laura Wasser, in an effort to protect her assets – including her beautiful real estate. No doubt she’ll soon be in the market for a property with suitable equine facilities as the songstress recently revealed on Instagram she’s planning to buy a horse. Perhaps as additional company following her sons’ move to Hawaii earlier this year with their father, Kevin Federline.

With a net worth of approximately $70 million (£55m) the star has worked her way through an incredible roster of real estate over the years, including a paparazzi-proof mansion in Beverly Hills and a stylish New York penthouse. But Britney wasn’t born into such a palatial property. Starting from her modest childhood home in Kentwood, we look back through Britney’s road to fame and peek inside the properties she’s stayed in along the way…
Britney Spears’ childhood
@britneyspears / Instagram
A world away from her life today, Britney Spears was born on 2 December 1981 in McComb, Mississippi. However, she spent most of her childhood in Kentwood, Louisiana alongside her brother, Bryan and sister Jamie Lynn. It was not long before she found her passion for singing and performing, destined for the stage from a young age.

At the age of eight, the budding singer went to audition for a role on Disney’s the All-New Mickey Mouse Club but didn’t land a part. However, just two years later, aged 10, she showcased her talents on Star Search, which gained her some public attention, though she ultimately did not win the competition.

Immediately moving to New York, staying in one of the company’s penthouses, she released her first single, ‘...Baby One More Time’, in 1998.

The condo became a point of contention during the 2021 ‘Free Britney’ movement, when a 2015 tweet by Britney’s younger sister, Jamie Lynn, resurfaced, in which Jamie Lynn claimed that the condo was her favourite vacation spot. She tweeted: “We have a condo is [sic] Destin, Florida and it’s the best getaway”. Contrary to the indications of the rediscovered tweet, Jamie Lynn had previously claimed that she had received no financial support from Spears. Jamie Lynn later posted on Instagram that she owned no such residence, and no one had bought her a beach property.

Has Britney changed her mind?
@britneyspears / Instagram
Just six months after moving in, the newlyweds reportedly put their new Calabasas home back on the market, priced at $12 million (£9.9m). Dirt reported on 28 February 2023 that she has accepted an offer of $10.1 million (£8.4m). That’s $1.7 million (£1.4m) less than she purchased it for. Britney had continued to post content from their old Thousand Oaks home, even after moving into their new residence – as seen here in a still from an Instagram video. Could it be something to do with Britney’s ex-partner, Kevin Federline being a close neighbour?
Firing up the rumour mill
@britneyspears / Instagram
According to The Mirror, the Toxic singer just hadn’t “fallen in love with the new home”. A source close to the couple reportedly told HollywoodLife that Britney “always preferred” her old house. “It is simply that Britney feels safe in her Thousand Oaks house, and she has so many memories there.” According to the source, Britney “never really vibed with the new house.” However, they denied that it was anything to do with the Calabasas location of the house and its proximity to her ex.
Will Britney reconcile with her sons?
ITV News
It was reported recently that Britney hasn’t seen her sons, Sean, 18, and Jayden, 17, for several months due to their “complicated relationship”, as described by the boys themselves in an ITV News interview. In the interview, Jayden optimistically stated: “I 100% think this can be fixed. It’s just going to take a lot of time and effort.”
Britney’s living in “virtual isolation”
@britneyspears / Instagram
After deciding to offload what was supposed to be her newlywed love nest and remain in her old Thousand Oaks home with her new husband, fans may have hoped Britney had finally found some stability. However, a new documentary threw that into question. TMZ‘s Britney Spears: The Price of Freedom, which aired in the US on 15 May, made shocking claims that she lives in “virtual isolation” from the outside world.
Is Britney ok?
@britneyspears / Instagram
The documentary claimed that Britney spends her time “tanning by the pool, reading fiction and driving aimlessly around her neighbourhood”, as well as posting solo dancing videos to Instagram. It also alleged that the superstar drinks so many caffeinated drinks that she sometimes stays awake for days at a time. However, Britney brushed off the claims. Addressing the reports via Instagram, she said although “green tea is my prized possession”, she never stays up late with Red Bull, saying “it is absolutely the worst drink ever”. The Price of Freedom also dropped bombshell allegations concerning the pop princess’ relationship with now estranged husband, Sam Asghari, claiming the pair had a volatile relationship. Just three months after the documentary aired, Asghari filed for divorce.
More heartache for Britney?
@britneyspears / Instagram
In addition to her divorce woes, it was reported that Britney had given her consent for her sons Preston and Jayden to move to Hawaii, a five-and-a-half-hour plane ride away. TMZ claims the singer hasn’t seen her children in over a year – since before her doomed marriage to Asghari – and alleges that their father, Kevin Federline, and his lawyer sent the songstress a letter asking if she would allow them to “relocate to Hawaii full-time.”
According to a source who spoke to ET Online, the divorce was “the last thing she needed, especially after her boys moved to Hawaii, being worried about the fires there, and so on.” Thankfully for Britney, the source maintains she “has people by her side and her immediate circle is there for her. They are rallying around her.”

Separating the dogs
@britneyspears / Instagram

@samasghari / Instagram
@britneyspears / Instagram

Britney and her family lived in this humble ranch-style home in Kentwood, Louisiana, where Britney spent most of her childhood until she was signed by Jive Records at just 15. Sitting on a two-acre lot, the house has three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms, which would have been perfect for the young family.

This modest celebrity childhood home, which was previously on the market for $289,000 (£232k), is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. Now the only empty room in the house, which came fully-furnished in the sale, is the star’s former bedroom. The local unofficial Britney Spears Museum stripped it bare to recreate her bedroom layout, so that fans can come and see how the star lived before her meteoric rise to fame.

After her time in the All-New Mickey Mouse Club came to an end in 1995, Britney started focusing on her singing career. She visited New York in 1997, and started auditioning for record labels, eventually getting signed by Jive Records. Immediately moving to New York, staying in one of the company’s penthouses, she released her first single, ‘...Baby One More Time’, in 1998.

After the huge success of her first single and her debut album, which was released in January 1999 and sold 25 million copies worldwide, the star decided to splash out on a home just outside of Kentwood, Louisiana. Named Serenity, the custom-built property is home to Lynne Spears, Britney’s mother, as detailed previously. The star’s estranged mother reportedly has been living in the property for over a decade.

According to Realtor, Bridgemore Timber LLC, an entity owned by Britney purchased this palatial pad in Destin, Florida back in 2001 for $920,000 (£740k). Built in 1983, the waterfront retreat offers three bedrooms, four bathrooms, and stunning ocean views.

Making their relationship official on New Year’s Day 2017, Sam ended up proposing in September 2021 with a custom diamond ring by Roman Malayev, featuring an engraving of her nickname, Lioness. Has Britney changed her mind?
@britneyspears / Instagram
@britneyspears / Instagram
@britneyspears / Instagram
@britneyspears / Instagram
@britneyspears / Instagram
