Nojaim Brothers, a locally-owned supermarket in Marcellus, will officially close this spring.
Owner Richard Nojaim has decided to retire, and with nobody to run the business, the grocery store will close its doors for good.
Nojaim Brothers opened in Marcellus 42 years ago, but the family has an even longer history in the grocery business.
In 1919, Nojaim’s grandfather Richard T. Nojaim, opened the first family store on Syracuse’s west side, staying open for nearly 100 years until it closed in 2017.
The Marcellus location was bought by Nojaim’s father Charlie in 1982. Richard has worked in the city store since he was 14, eventually becoming manager of the Marcellus store.
Late last week, Nojaim told his 14 full-time and 20 part-time employees of the closure.
The closure also marks the loss of the Village of Marcellus’s only supermarket. Residents will now have to travel to Skaneateles or Camillus to get their groceries.
Nojaim told CNY Central that Nojaim’s has an option with Stewart’s Shops, a Saratoga Springs-based convenience store chain, to buy the property, but the purchase isn’t definite.
