Sofía Vergara has revealed about the reasons behind her success in Hollywood and it turns out that she thinks her famous body “opened doors for her.”
Now, the 51-year-old actress has left her mark on the entertainment industry over 30 years. After starting as a young model at the age of 21, she quickly earned herself a role in the criminal comedy Big Trouble back in 2002.
However, her breakthrough role came about in 2009 when she was offered the part of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the American television series Modern Family. After running for 11 seasons, the sitcom finally came to an end in 2020.
Since then, the star has been working on other projects, the latest being Griselda, a six-part Netflix crime drama telling the story of Miami’s ‘Cocaine Godmother’ Griselda Blanco.
Speaking to the Spanish newspaper El País earlier this month, Vergara admitted that her “giant boobs” and her incredible physique have given her multiple acting opportunities.
“It would be absurd to deny it or for that to make me feel bad,” she said of claims that her looks aided her career. “My giant boobs and my body opened doors for me; they were my passport to the world when I was 20 years old when I started as a model, but today I’m 51 years old and I’m still here.”
She also admitted that the first time she realized that her looks could play in her favor was back in high school when the boys around her started treating her differently.
“Not that it made me feel any better, but you realize that they treat you differently,” she recalled. “From a very young age, I’ve known my strengths and I’ve played to them.”
However, the actress added that her ability to take risks in her career has helped her stick around for so long.
“I don’t do brain surgery, it’s just entertainment, and the worst that can happen to me is that they can say I look ugly or that this jacka** doesn’t know how to act. I can take it,” she told the outlet.
“If you only see my boobs, then that’s your problem,” she said, also adding: “There are women who are prettier, younger, who have bigger breasts and a better body than me, but I’m still around because I have demonstrated that I can stay.”
The 51-year-old’s latest project, Griselda, has earned her some mixed reviews as it recently made its debut on the streaming platform earlier this week.
While Vergara has been praised for her depiction of Blanco, a woman who allegedly paved the way for the most infamous Colombian cartel, the show has been slated by critics over “shoddy” scenes and “one-note” supporting characters.
Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter reviewed the piece, writing: “As dramatically shoddy as Griselda increasingly becomes, Vergara keeps it watchable. The hardest-working member of the Modern Family cast — she consistently elevated Gloria from walking stereotype to intricate punchline machine, yet never won an Emmy.
“Vergara, an executive producer here, deserves full credit for unveiling a whole new set of serious chops,” Fienberg added.
Loud and Clear critic Clotilde Chinnici slammed the lack of character development but enjoyed the miniseries due to Vergara’s “magnetic” acting.
“…The motivation of the characters, and their development, such as Darío and ever Griselda in the last two episodes, is not always clear and often rushed,” the review read before going on to commend the actress for her portrayal of Blanco.
“Griselda always remains the sole focus on every single scene she is in, thanks to Sofia Vergara’s magnetic acting,” it added.
