Brick-and-mortar retailers face a significant challenge due to the rise of online shopping. Retailers like TJ Maxx and Marshalls purchase products in bulk at a discounted price and then sell them at an affordable price. But as the merchandise keeps changing, and orders lead to different items being available in different stores, it becomes nearly impossible for them to create an online marketplace. This makes such retailers rely solely on their physical storefronts, and now, TJ Maxx and Marshalls have announced the closure of several locations across the US.
Already, a TJ Maxx location has closed in St. Paul, Minnesota, and several other closures will follow through early 2024. The company reported to Axios that the 55 workers affected by the closing had been offered positions at other locations in the city.
