Bad News For Customers, Walmart Closed Its Store Permanently

On the heels of two closings in California, Walmart announced it is shuttering another location.
A company spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider it will close a location in Columbus, Ohio on Friday.

Financial underperformance was cited as the reason for the closure. The Columbus store employs about 177 workers and some would be eligible to apply for roles at other locations.

Earlier this month, Walmart announced it was closing two stores in San Diego County, California – one a Neighborhood Market and another Walmart location in El Cajon.

The stores closed Feb. 9 after the company failed to reach an agreement with property owners and opted not to renew the leases.
Last year, Walmart closed 20 stores across 11 states, including four in Chicago, due to poor financial performance.

There are more than 4,616 Walmart stores located across the U.S.

Walmart recently announced it will build or convert 150 stores into larger format locations. The projects will start with a pair of Neighborhood Market Formations, one in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and another in Atlanta Georgia.

Walmart is also finalizing construction plans on 12 new projects that will start in 2024, as well as converting one of its smaller locations to a Walmart Supercenter. Those locations haven’t been announced. Included in the plans are remodels for an additional 650 stores across 47 states.
