Former actress and broadcaster Kathryn Apanowicz has died at the age of 64,
sparking heartfelt tributes from friends and fans alike. Her death was announced on Monday, March 3, 2025, after she endured a long illness. Apanowicz, who was known best for her television roles, was the partner of Countdown legend Richard Whiteley from 1994 until his passing in 2005.
Former ITV Calendar presenter Christa Ackroyd shared her sorrow on social media, writing, “Reunited with her beloved Richard. I will miss you so much my lovely friend. What adventures we had. The world will always be a duller place without you…” This touching sentiment reflects the deep bond and the adventures they cherished together.
Kathryn Apanowicz began her career as a child performer on the Yorkshire Television show Junior Show Time, introducing her to the world of entertainment at an early age. She later played roles on the big stage, including appearing as one of the child actors in the classic film Bugsy Malone, which showcased her talents alongside stars like Jodie Foster.
She gained fame as Nurse Rose Butchins on the popular BBC series Angels, which focused on the lives and challenges of student nurses. Apanowicz’s performances won her acclaim and led her to appear in several iconic UK soap operas, including EastEnders, where she portrayed Magda Czajkowski, and emblems of British television like Emmerdale and Coronation Street.
Apanowicz also had significant roles across channels, including ITV, where she was known for her engaging presence on shows like Live Talk, later rebranded as Loose Women. Her versatility extended to radio, where she hosted programs on BBC Radio Leeds and BBC Radio York during her later years.
After the death of her partner Richard Whiteley, Kathryn channeled her grief and memories of their time together by publishing the book, Richard by Kathryn: The Life of Richard Whiteley. The book provides insights not only about Whiteley’s successful television career but also about their intimate relationship and the challenges they faced.
Whiteley, who died from heart complications at age 61, remained by Kathryn’s side for seven years during their relationship, which began when both were prominent figures on British television. Following his death, Kathryn found herself confronting rumors and allegations surrounding his past, famously denying wild claims about his supposed ties to MI5. She emphasized his genuine character, noting, “My partner was not capable of such conspiracies due to his struggles with technology and mathematics.”
