Shane MacGowan, lead singer and producer for the band Pogues, has died. He was 65 years old and had been sick for a while.
What The Pogues said on social media: “It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest of hearts that we announce the death of Shane MacGowan.”
Shane died quietly this morning at 3 a.m., surrounded by his family and wife Victoria.
MacGowan had been getting care at Dublin’s St. Vincent’s Hospital for a few months. He got out of the hospital on November 22 and went home to spend time with his family and friends.
He was in charge of the Irish punk band that made the hit holiday song “Fairytale of New York” in 1987. This was in the 1980s.
Victoria Mary Clarke, MacGowan’s wife, wrote on Instagram, “There’s no way to describe the loss that I am feeling and the longing for just one more of his smiles that lit up my world.”
